Carbon Daily Allowance Labelling
This article dives into one of the most controlling issues in our food system, greenhouse gas emissions. It goes further than just reporting a carbon footprint for products by considering how the Carbon Daily Allowance (CDA) will be used for food and beverage products. This is a bold step and a world first that begins to make carbon foot printing resonant with customers so that change can be guided for reducing climate change impacts.
The article reports on some of the limiting issues we have worked with using the current metrics used by the industry, some of which can be confusing and contradictory. Which risks the main objective of carbon reduction getting lost in communication. Science Based Targets and research testing have provided our route to the CDA and we report on this here. The CDA has been calibrated using guidance from nutritional traffic lights, taking a life cycle assessment approach that considers all aspects of a products lifecycle, from farm, transportation, process to plate.
